What is the Zone?

Let’s start with the word “Zone.” The word was coined in the 90’s when people understood that at a certain point, athletes got into a ‘zone’ where their actions were both effortless and extraordinary. The word later came to describe a state of mind that people experience when their thinking, feeling, and acting are all in harmonious alignment. You know that feeling yourself. You begin to work in the garden, and suddenly you lose track of time, you feel great, and you are ‘in the zone.’ The Zone diet is intended to keep you feeling great even while you lose weight.

The good news about the Zone diet is that it was created by a medical doctor who understands how the body functions. Dr. Sears also recognized that a major cause of overeating is the out-of-control insulin surges we feel. The original Zone Bar was a nutritious food supplement that kept the sugar levels functioning well. From there, the next step was the creation of a diet that would really help with weight loss.

How does the Zone Diet work?

The main principle behind the zone diet is controlling insulin. It does this through regular meals and snacks, and appropriate foods. The Zone diet does not focus on calories but on food types. The number one focus is to minimize carbohydrates like potatoes, rice, breads and cereals. Increase fruits and vegetables, and add protein to create a steady insulin level.

The Zone Diet Secret Formula

The zone diet relies on a specific approach to meals: the balance of protein, carbohydrates and fats with each meal or snack. The formula they use is 1:1:1 for each of those. On the zone website, there are specific examples for how to calculate how much you need of each of the three food types in order to achieve a one to one ratio.

Does the zone diet work?

The big question about the Zone diet is, Does it work? The answer is … it depends on you. First, all body types respond differently to proteins and carbohydrates so there is no guarantee. However, the some aspects of their diet will work for anyone. For example, they include 64 ounces of water a day, including one glass prior to a meal. It is easily proven that just increasing your water consumption does assist with weight loss. The other factor to consider is whether you will take the time to balance each meal.
