Low Carb Diets You'll LoveIf you think that a low carb diet is not for you, then you haven’t found a low carb diet that you’ll love enough to stay on. However, there are some low carb diets that you can try out. A Real Low Carb Diet The original low carb diet was the Atkins diet, which restricted your intake of carbohydrates. Carbohydrates are found in grains especially, like breads and pasta, as well as in other foods. So on an Atkins diet you would replace these with protein and dairy products. Many people found the Atkins diet a bit too severe in restricting carbohydrates. The South Beach Diet The South Beach Diet is a modified low carb diet, and as a result many people love this diet. While it restricts carbs in the first two weeks, by the third week you can add back in a certain amount of carbohydrates, and when you reach your goal you can continue to have about 28 percent of your calories from carbohydrates. This modified diet seems to be easier for many people to follow. Don’t Go No-Carb It is not really healthy to cut out all the carbs in your diet. Carbohydrates are a building block in your system. The trick is to find out how to balance carbohydrates with protein and other foods. Warnings about Low Carb Diets One of the main things to understand about a low carb diet, whether it is Atkins or South Beach, is that not all doctors agree that it is healthy to completely restrict carbs in the way that these diets do for the first two weeks. In addition, the restrictions lead to a very rapid weight loss, which we have explained in other articles is not a healthy way to lose weight. So there are some really important health considerations. Before starting on any low carb diet, you should consult your own health practitioner. An Alternative to a Low Carb Diet Rather than cutting carbs out of your diet, it would be more helpful to begin to burn more calories by exercise. You can limit the amount of heavy carbs, such as bread and pasta, but include all the other carbs that are healthy such as whole grains. Then, add twenty to forty minutes of exercise a day, such as brisk walking. You will find yourself burning up the calories. It is amazing that once you really begin to exercise, you actually need the calories from carbs, because your body needs fuel. So focus on the balance of calories in and calories being burned off, and you can probably enjoy carbs in moderation.
