Reasons to Lose WeightEveryone has his or her own reason for wanting to lose weight. For some, it is outer motivation—a spouse or other loved one keeps nagging about it. However, it is actually harder to lose weight if your reasons come from outside. You need inner motivation, because sticking with the plan to lose weight is not always easy. Here are some common reasons to lose weight. Lose Weight for Health Reasons There is no lack of evidence that heart disease as well as other health problems, including diabetes, are directly correlated with being overweight. If you are someone who does not like to be ill, who wants to live a long and thriving life, then you might lose weight for health reasons. Even if you are healthy now, the ability to look into the future and visualize being quite ill, may motivate you enough to being to lose weight. Lose Weight for Appearance Reasons You may be someone who notices themselves in the mirror, and feels dismayed at the sight. You would like to appear better in your own eyes, and in the eyes of people who you care about. If you choose to lose weight for appearance reasons, then you are highly motivated by certain clothing you might want to wear, or by the general feeling of attractiveness that you associate with being thinner. This is a good reason as long as it is not based on false ideas of what a good shape is. Don’t imagine that you need to lose weight to look like Twiggy. Rather, focus on the areas where there is just a bit too much fat, such as thighs, abdomen and buttocks. Be moderate if this is your weight loss reason. Lose Weight for More Energy More energy does fall under health reasons, but it is slightly more immediate. When we lose weight for health reasons, it is to avoid some disease in the future. However, when we lose weight for more energy, the pay-off is immediate. Most people discover that as they shed pounds, their fatigue dissolves, and their energy level is quite high. This is not due to artificial stimulants such as caffeine. Rather, it is due to the fact that the body no longer has to work so hard to process extra food, nor carry around excess weight. The metabolic system is freed up to give you energy rather than use all its power on digestion. Lose Weight for Self-Esteem Many people who are overweight also suffer from low self-esteem. In fact, it is not uncommon for the low self-esteem to be the cause of being overweight. People overeat to satisfy the longing to be loved. However, as you lose weight, your self-esteem improves for a variety of reasons. First, there is the pride of reaching a goal. Second, there is the improved general appearance. Finally, the increased energy removes the seeds of depression and you find more things to do that you enjoy, and more energy to do them. The result is that your self-esteem goes up. If you are feeling sorry for yourself, feeling along, and bereft of the joy of life, try losing some extra weight, and see the sun come shining through.
