Evaluating Diet CentersDiet centers have sprung up all over the country because losing weight can be hard on your own. It is really helpful to have a support group. How can you evaluate the various diet centers and choose which one is best for you? Here are some questions to ask yourself or the center as you make your choice. 1. Do you need a residential diet center? Sometimes it helps to get a jump start on your weight loss program by going away to a specialized diet center. Many of these programs will evaluate your particular needs, put you on a program, instruct you in nutrition and exercise, and feed you fabulous diet foods. If you are looking to go away, be sure that you also apply the other criteria listed below. 2. Is the Diet Center promoting its own product? It is not necessarily a bad thing that the diet center focuses around a product. For example, Jenny Craig™ centers clearly are interested in setting you up on their products. However, the main thing to be clear about is what you are getting into. What are the costs of their products? Do you like their products? Will you stick with them? 3. Is exercise a part of the center? Be wary of any diet center that promotes only the use of diet products or foods. Exercise is a key part of weight loss. The ideal diet center includes both nutrition and exercise facilities for you to use. 4. Is there medical support available? If you are losing weight and have any medical concerns, be sure that the diet center you choose includes access to a registered nurse or doctor with whom you can discuss your concerns. If the center doesn’t have that, but meets all your other criteria, then schedule a visit with your own physician before you begin. 5. Is it nearby? Choosing a location that is out of your way, or takes a while to get to, is a sure plan for failure. It means that you will either resent the gas that it takes to get there, or worse, you will stop going. 6. Do you need to sign a long-term contract? Be sure to investigate the finances before you begin. Many places have a wonderful price, only if you commit for a year, giving them your credit card for regular withdrawals. While you may have good intentions for staying with a place, you should never make a financial commitment that includes any kind of penalty for cancelling. You are the customer, you are in charge, and you should make the decisions about how long you want to participate. 7. Are they certified in any way? As a minimum, it would be good to know that the diet center is part of your local chamber of commerce. In addition, be sure they are not a scam. You can check with the Better Business Bureau if you have any doubts at all. Choose Wisely and You will have no regrets.
