Elements of a Healthy Diet

In order to lose weight, you need a healthy diet and active lifestyle. When you hear the words ‘healthy diet’, you may imagine austerity, eating foods you hate, like tofu or broccoli, but that’s not all that a healthy diet is. In fact, it’s a lot easier than you think. Here are four key elements:

1. A Healthy Diet Includes Fresh Vegetables and Fruits

Any diet, whether to lose weight, control heart disease, or just to live a good life, includes fresh vegetables and fruits. These are essential for vitamins and minerals, and also provide some of the fiber that helps your digestion. Try and have fresh vegetables at least once a day, if not more. Did you know that you could cook up some greens, like chard, and add them to your scrambled eggs in the morning to create a perfect start to your day? Having a big salad at noon is a great way to make your healthy diet a weight loss diet as well. You might want to avoid salads at night as they are harder to digest.

2. A Healthy Diet Includes Good Fats

To be balanced and healthy, your diet should not eliminate all fats. Rather, you want to eliminate the saturated fats and transfats. Oils such as Olive Oil are perfect to include in a healthy diet. Stay away from things like corn oil, palm oil and coconut oil. It is fine to have full-fat milk and yogurt, although you might want to go lightly on full-fat cheese. The processing of cheese does make it more fattening to your system than yogurt.

3. A Healthy Diet Includes Protein

You need protein in your diet daily. How much is a subject of discussion. However, you do need protein. However, it does not need to come from red meat or fish. It is also possible to be a vegetarian and get sufficient protein from legumes, dairy, and some vegetables. If you like soy, you can include soy in your healthy diet, but not everyone is able to digest soy easily. If you are not a vegetarian, consider fish, chicken or turkey a few times a week, and stay away from red meat, as it is not the best for your health. You can also consider a protein powder as a supplement, which can be added to a fruit smoothie.

4. A Healthy Diet Uses Moderation in Carbohydrates

It is possible to eliminate carbohydrates from your diet and lose significant amounts of weight. Breads and pastas are known to increase your weight. However, over the long run, completely eliminating any food group is not practical nor is it healthy. There are benefits to be had from a variety of grains. A more suitable approach to carbohydrates is to have them in moderation, and always accompanied by protein and vegetables. You don’t want to make them the main portion of any meal.

A Healthy Diet is a LifeStyle Change

Switching to a healthy diet is not about just losing weight. It is about become conscious about what you eat and when you eat. Then your life and eating habits are in harmony, and you will weigh the perfect amount.
